


The Art of the Illuminated Letter - July 16th and 23rd 10am-12pm

This two-part workshop introduces the techniques used to create raised, illuminated initials inspired by medieval manuscripts. Participants will study historical examples, sketch their own letter, build up raised areas using traditional adhesives, and apply thin sheets of gold leaf. Along the way, you’ll create a richly gilded piece of art while gaining a deeper connection to the visual traditions that shaped the Middle Ages.
Supply list (or pay instructor $10 for a supply kit):
Paper or canvas
Gold leaf
Gold Leaf applique brush
Sizing Glue
Gouache paints (preferably red, blue, and black)
Detail paint brushes
Paint brushes for glue application
Powdered chalk
Wood glue
Red clay bole

With six years of professional teaching experience, Allison Taylor brings a thoughtful and engaging approach to every class she leads. She has taught high school biology and English for adult learners, and currently offers personalized one-on-one art lessons from her home studio.
Allison's passion for calligraphy has flourished over the past five years, with a focus on Gothic-style lettering. and illumination. Her dedication to the craft has earned her top honors, including First Place in Calligraphy at the 2024 Oregon State Fair and multiple awards at the Clackamas County Fair.
